O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the passing away of Your favors and blessings, and from the change of Your protection, and from the sudden punishment, and from all that displeases You. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and sorrow, and I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice and miserliness, and I seek refuge in You from being overcome by debt and from being oppressed by men.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.
When to Read
This comprehensive dua, while not exclusively about nature, encompasses gratitude for all of Allah's blessings, including the natural world. We can recite this dua regularly, perhaps after Fajr prayer as the Prophet ﷺ would, or anytime we reflect on the immense bounties Allah has bestowed upon us, whether it's the sun rising, the rain falling, or the sustenance He provides from the earth. It's a prayer for the preservation of blessings, a core aspect of gratitude.
How to Read
Recite with sincerity and a present heart, truly reflecting on the meanings of seeking Allah's refuge. Utter the words clearly, acknowledging that all protection and blessings come from Allah alone. Imagine the beautiful world around you – the sky, the trees, the water – and feel a profound sense of gratitude for being able to witness and benefit from it, while simultaneously seeking Allah's protection against its loss or any negative turn. This dua should be a deeply personal conversation with your Creator.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is a powerful tool for cultivating a mindful and grateful heart. By seeking refuge from the loss of blessings, we are actively affirming our appreciation for what we have. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself was the most grateful of people, and his supplications demonstrate how to express this gratitude and seek Allah's continued favor. This prayer reminds us that every aspect of nature, from the grandest mountain to the smallest blade of grass, is a sign of Allah's power and mercy. Our ability to benefit from these signs is itself a tremendous blessing that deserves constant acknowledgment and thanks.
Source & Authentication
The full hadith narrative associated with this dua is extensive, but the core is about the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ habit of making comprehensive supplications. It is reported by Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet ﷺ used to say, "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and sorrow, helplessness and laziness, cowardice and miserliness, the burden of debt and the subduing of men." (Sahih Muslim 4924). This specific phrasing is part of a broader pattern of the Prophet's ﷺ seeking Allah's protection and acknowledging His blessings, which inherently includes the blessings of nature.
