The Dua for Gratitude and a Humble Heart

Gratitude
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 3542

O Allah, make me one who is grateful to You. O Allah, make me one who remembers You. O Allah, make me one who is loving towards You. O Allah, make me one who is humble and penitent towards You, humble and penitent.

Allahumma ij'alni shakiran lak, Allahumma ij'alni dhakooran lak, Allahumma ij'alni wadoodan lak, Allahumma ij'alni ilayka mukhbitan wa ilayka awwahan awwahan.

When to Read

This is a beautiful supplication that can be recited at any time, but it's particularly meaningful after receiving blessings or at the end of your daily prayers. It’s a heartfelt plea to cultivate a heart that is consistently thankful and mindful of Allah.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and focus, truly feeling the meaning behind each phrase. Raise your hands if you are able, as this is a practice of seeking from Allah. Reflect on the qualities you are asking for: gratitude, remembrance, love, humility, and repentance. Let the words flow from your heart.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly asks Allah to imbue you with the essential qualities of a true believer. Cultivating gratitude (shukr) is a key aspect of faith, as Allah says, 'And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]' (Quran 14:7). Asking for remembrance (dhikr) keeps Allah present in your life, and asking for love (wudd) for Allah draws you closer to Him. Humility (ikhbat) and penitence (awwah) are signs of a heart that recognizes its dependence on Allah and seeks His forgiveness.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated that Abdullah bin Mas'ud said: 'The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to supplicate: "O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and richness." And he would supplicate: "O Allah, make me one who is grateful to You, one who remembers You, one who is loving towards You, and one who is humble and penitent towards You. O Allah, make me one who is resilient in trials, grateful for blessings, thankful for good fortune, and content with destiny." It was said to him: 'Teach us this, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'There is no person who is given something by Allah and says: "O Allah, praise be to You for what You have given me, and thank You for what You have bestowed upon me." But Allah will forgive him for it (his sins). And he who says: "O Allah, make me one who is grateful to You, one who remembers You, one who is loving towards You, and one who is humble and penitent towards You, O Allah, make me one who is resilient in trials, grateful for blessings, thankful for good fortune, and content with destiny." Allah will give him the reward of one who has endured patiently.' [Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3542,graded Hasan by the compiler].
