Gratitude

All praise is due to Allah for what He has bestowed and for what He has tested, and all praise is due to Allah for what He has given, and to Him is all gratitude for what He has taken. I ask Him for mercy that renews Islam in my heart, and I ask Him for gratitude for His blessings, and I ask Him for a good end, and I ask Him for faith and Paradise. I ask Him to bless me in my family, my wealth, and my children, and to grant me their righteousness. And to keep me alive as long as You keep me alive, and to cause me to die when You cause me to die, and to admit me into Paradise.

Al-hamdu lillah 'ala ma an'ama wa bima ibtala, wal-hamdu lillah 'ala ma a'ta, wa lahush-shukru 'ala ma akhadha, wa as'aluhu rahmatan tujaddidu al-Islama fi qalbi, wa as'aluhu shukran ni'mah, wa as'aluhu husnal 'aqibah, wa as'aluhu al-imana wal-jannah, wa as'aluhu an yubarikali fi ahli wa mali waladi, wa an yarzuqani birrahum, wa an yuhyini ma ahya'tani, wa an yumitani idha ammatani, wa an yudkhilani al-jannah.

When to Read

This profound dua is perfect for expressing deep gratitude upon the arrival of a new child or grandchild. It’s a moment when Allah’s mercy is most palpable, and our hearts are naturally inclined towards Him. Recite it after the baby has been born, perhaps when you first hold them, or offer it in prayer after the birth. It’s also fitting when you hear the news of the blessed arrival.

How to Read

Recite this dua with a sincere heart, reflecting on the immense blessing of a new life. Face the Qiblah if possible, raise your hands as you would in supplication, and pour your heart out to Allah. Begin by acknowledging Allah’s greatness and His perfect decree, then specifically ask for His blessings on the child and the family. Remember to express your own need for Allah’s mercy and guidance. The act of making dua itself is an act of worship, so approach it with humility and conviction.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is comprehensive, encompassing gratitude for both blessings and trials, acknowledging that both are from Allah. It specifically asks for the renewal of faith, the ability to be grateful, a good end, and the ultimate reward of Jannah. Most importantly for this occasion, it’s a direct supplication for Allah's blessings upon the newborn, asking for their righteousness and the joy they bring to the family. It reminds us that a child is a trust from Allah, and we must pray for their well-being and our ability to raise them according to His guidance.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught this comprehensive dua to a man who asked him, "O Messenger of Allah, teach me words to say." He instructed him to say:
