The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Every matter of importance that is not begun with praise of Allah is cut off (or incomplete).'

ʿan Abī Hurayrah, qāl: qāl Rasūlu Llāhi ṣallā Llāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam: «kullu amrin dhī bālin lā yubdaʾu fīhi bi-l-ḥamdi li-Llāhi fa-huwa aqṭaʿu»

When to Read

This profound statement encourages us to begin *any* significant endeavor, whether big or small, with the remembrance and praise of Allah. It's about setting the right intention and acknowledging His sovereignty over all affairs. You can say 'Alhamdulillah' when you wake up, before eating, before starting work, when you receive good news, and even when facing challenges, as this hadith highlights the importance of His praise in all matters.

How to Read

Recite 'Alhamdulillah' (الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ) sincerely from the heart. The essence is not just the utterance, but the feeling of gratitude and recognition of Allah's grace. It's a constant internal state of thankfulness that should manifest in our words and actions. The phrase 'ala kulli hal' (عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ), meaning 'in every state' or 'in all circumstances,' is often added to this sentiment, reflecting a deeper level of contentment with Allah's decree, both in ease and hardship.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet ﷺ taught us that commencing any matter with 'Alhamdulillah' makes it complete and blessed. It shifts our focus from our own capabilities to Allah's power and mercy, fostering contentment and reducing anxiety. By acknowledging His blessings, we invite more blessings into our lives, as the Quran states: 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you in favor' (Ibrahim 14:7). Embracing 'Alhamdulillah ala kulli hal' means finding peace in Allah's plan, knowing that even in trials, there is wisdom and a test that can elevate our status.
