Gratitude
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 771

سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ، تَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ، وَتَعَالَى جَدُّكَ، وَلاَ إِلَهَ غَيْرُكَ

Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. Blessed be Your name, and exalted be Your majesty. There is no god but You.

Subhanakallahumma wa bihamdik, tabarakasmuk, wa ta'ala jadduk, wa la ilaha ghayruk

When to Read

This beautiful and comprehensive supplication is recited by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when he begins his prayer. It's a profound way to express gratitude and acknowledge Allah's perfection at the very outset of seeking His audience. You can adapt this sentiment of gratitude and praise to any moment Allah makes a task easy for you, a difficult situation resolve, or a blessing manifest.

How to Read

This dua is a foundational opening for prayer, setting a tone of humility and praise. When reciting it outside of the formal prayer, do so with a sincere heart, focusing on the meaning of each phrase. Feel the awe and wonder of Allah's greatness and recognize that every ease comes from Him. It's a reminder that all blessings, big or small, are gifts from our Creator.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates comprehensive praise and glorification of Allah. By starting with 'Subhanakallahumma' (Glory be to You, O Allah), we are acknowledging His absolute perfection, free from any flaw or deficiency. 'Wa bihamdik' (and praise be to You) signifies our gratitude for all His favors. 'Tabarakasmuk' (Blessed be Your name) highlights the barakah (blessing and abundance) inherent in His name. 'Wa ta'ala jadduk' (and exalted be Your majesty) points to His supreme power and might, far beyond anything we can comprehend. Finally, 'Wa la ilaha ghayruk' (There is no god but You) affirms Tawhid, the absolute oneness of Allah, which is the foundation of our faith. Reciting this when things become easy is a way to ensure that our gratitude is directed solely towards the One who facilitated it, preventing any sense of self-reliance or forgetfulness.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, when he stood to pray at night, would open his prayer with: 'Subhanakallahumma wa bihamdik, tabarakasmuk, wa ta'ala jadduk, wa la ilaha ghayruk.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 771). The hadith indicates this was his opening supplication in the night prayer, but its comprehensive nature makes it suitable for expressing gratitude at any time, especially when Allah grants ease.
