Dua for a Blessed and Peaceful End

Gratitude
Hasan HadithAl-Mustadrak 'ala al-Sahihayn 2588

O Allah, I ask You for a happy life, a happy death, and I ask You not to disgrace me in this world or in the Hereafter. Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'eeshatan sa'eedatan wa mītatan sa'eedatan, wa as'aluka an la tukhziyanee fid-dunya wa la fil-akhirah. Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah wa fil-akhirati hasanah wa qina 'adhaban-nar.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that encompasses requests for well-being in both this life and the next. It's particularly fitting to recite this upon waking, before significant undertakings, or during times of reflection, as it encapsulates a profound desire for a life lived in accordance with Allah's pleasure and a dignified end.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a hopeful heart, understanding the immense blessings you are asking for. Raise your hands as you do, as is the practice when making supplication. Reflect on the meaning of each phrase, internalizing the plea for happiness in life, a peaceful departure, and protection from disgrace and the Fire.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful supplication for holistic well-being. It acknowledges our dependence on Allah for a life that is pleasing to Him and a death that is met with His mercy, rather than shame or punishment. Asking for 'goodness' in this world and the Hereafter covers all aspects of a believer's needs, while the specific request to be protected from the Hellfire highlights the ultimate goal of seeking Allah's refuge. The inclusion of the Quranic verse "Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter and protect us from the punishment of the Fire" (Al-Baqarah 2:201) adds immense weight and assurance.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to supplicate frequently with this dua. The hadith mentions: 'The Prophet (ﷺ) used to supplicate frequently with this dua: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka 'eeshatan sa'eedatan wa mītatan sa'eedatan, wa as'aluka an la tukhziyanee fid-dunya wa la fil-akhirah. Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah wa fil-akhirati hasanah wa qina 'adhaban-nar.' (Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter and protect us from the punishment of the Fire).' This dua was narrated by Abdullah bin Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) and authenticated by Imam Al-Hakim, who classified it as Hasan.
