Dua for Seeking Refuge from Self-Importance and Arrogance

Good Character
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2710

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the demolition of Your blessings, the reversal of Your well-being, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all that You decree. I seek refuge in You from the trial of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of wealth, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of poverty, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Dajjal. O Allah, cleanse my heart with the water of snow and hail, and purify my heart from sins as You purified the white garment from dirt, and keep me far from my sins as You kept far the East and the West.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-qabr, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-ghina, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-faqr, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatid-Dajjal.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive supplication that can be recited at any time, particularly after Salah (obligatory prayers) when the Prophet ﷺ encouraged making dua. It's especially relevant when one feels a stir of pride or self-importance, or when reflecting on the potential pitfalls of wealth, poverty, or the grave.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, understanding that true strength and protection come only from Allah. It's recommended to raise your hands slightly during the supplication, as is the Sunnah for many duas. Reflect on the potential dangers of arrogance and self-importance, recognizing them as spiritual diseases that can distance us from Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua covers vast aspects of seeking Allah's protection. By asking refuge from the 'demolition of blessings' and 'reversal of well-being,' we acknowledge our complete dependence on Allah. Seeking refuge from the 'trial of wealth' and 'poverty' highlights how both extremes can lead to spiritual hardship, including arrogance or despair. Crucially, it includes seeking refuge from the 'trial of the grave' and the 'Dajjal,' major tests for the Ummah. The cleansing and purification requested for the heart are direct pleas against the internal diseases of arrogance and self-importance, which are corrosive to faith and good character. This prayer is a powerful shield against spiritual decay and a means to maintain humility and purity of intention.

Source & Authentication

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) would finish his morning prayer, he would say: 'O Allah, I ask You for useful knowledge, acceptable provisions, and performed deeds.' And whenever he finished his afternoon prayer, he would say the same. And when he finished his evening prayer, he would say: 'O Allah, I ask You for useful knowledge, acceptable provisions, and performed deeds.' And when he finished his night prayer, he would say: 'O Allah, I ask You for useful knowledge, acceptable provisions, and performed deeds.' He (ﷺ) also used to say: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the demolition of Your blessings, the reversal of Your well-being, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all that You decree. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the trial of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of wealth, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of poverty, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Dajjal. O Allah, cleanse my heart with the water of snow and hail, and purify my heart from sins as You purified the white garment from dirt, and keep me far from my sins as You kept far the East and the West.'
