Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1549

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, the reversal of Your well-being, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that You decree of Your anger. And I seek refuge in You from the trial of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Dajjal. O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and seek refuge in You from the Fire. O Allah, I ask You for steadfastness in all matters, and I ask You for determination in guidance, and I ask You for gratitude for Your blessings and excellence in worshipping You. And I ask You for a sound heart and a truthful tongue, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of what You know. And I ask You for the good of what You know, and I seek Your forgiveness for what You know. Indeed, You are the Knower of the unseen.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuj'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-qabri, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatid-Dajjal. Allahumma inni as'alukal-Jannah wa a'udhu bika minan-nar. Allahumma inni as'alukath-thabata fil-amr, wa as'aluka 'azimatir-rushdi, wa as'aluka shukra ni'matik, wa husna 'ibadatik, wa as'aluka qalban saliman, wa lisanan sadiqan, wa a'udhu bika min sharri ma ta'lam, wa as'aluka min khairi ma ta'lam, wa astaghfiruka mimma ta'lam, innaka anta 'Allamul-Ghuyub.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is excellent to recite after every prayer, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often teach his companions comprehensive supplications. It is also beneficial to read it in the morning and evening, seeking protection from all forms of harm, both seen and unseen, including the subtle deception of one's own ego.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, raising your hands as is customary for supplication. Understand the meaning of each phrase and reflect on your need for Allah's protection from being deceived by your own desires or misjudging reality. Repeating it consistently, especially after prayers, embeds its protection into your daily life.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses a broad range of seeking refuge. It protects against the loss of blessings and the reversal of good health, shielding one from sudden calamities and divine displeasure. It also explicitly seeks protection from the trials of the grave and the Dajjal, the greatest trial of this world. Furthermore, it asks for inner strength (steadfastness and determination), gratitude, and excellent worship, alongside a sound heart and truthful tongue. This guards against self-deception by purifying one's intentions and actions, leading to a more honest self-assessment and sincere devotion.

Source & Authentication

The narration in Sunan Abi Dawud states: It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin Mughaffal who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught us a supplication, saying: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuj'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-qabri, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatid-Dajjal. Allahumma inni as'alukal-Jannah wa a'udhu bika minan-nar. Allahumma inni as'alukath-thabata fil-amr, wa as'aluka 'azimatir-rushdi, wa as'aluka shukra ni'matik, wa husna 'ibadatik, wa as'aluka qalban saliman, wa lisanan sadiqan, wa a'udhu bika min sharri ma ta'lam, wa as'aluka min khairi ma ta'lam, wa astaghfiruka mimma ta'lam, innaka anta 'Allamul-Ghuyub.' (Sahih according to Al-Albani).
