Dua for a Heart Free of Malice and Judgment

Good Character
QuranAl-Hashr 59:10

Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and do not place in our hearts any malice toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful.

Rabbanaghfir lana wali ikhwaninal-ladhina sabaquna bil-imani wala taj'al fi qulubina ghillal-lilladhina amanu Rabbana innaka Ra'ufur Rahim.

When to Read

When we find ourselves reflecting on our relationships with others, or when we feel a pang of judgment or ill-will towards a fellow Muslim, this beautiful Quranic dua becomes a shield for our hearts. It's especially powerful after your daily prayers, during Qiyam al-Layl, or any moment you are making personal supplication (dua). Think of it as a spiritual cleansing—a moment to consciously ask Allah to purify your inner self from anything that would prevent you from loving for your brother what you love for yourself. It’s also a profound supplication for the entire Ummah, both living and those who have passed before us.

How to Read

Approach this dua with humility and a deep understanding of its purpose. It's not just words; it's a heartfelt plea to Allah to cleanse your heart. As you recite it, let your mind dwell on the believers you know, and those you don't. Ask Allah to forgive *them* as much as you ask Him to forgive *you*, and to remove any trace of resentment or ill-feeling you might harbor. Raise your hands in supplication, feeling your dependence on Allah's boundless mercy and His ability to transform hearts. Repeat it often, allowing its profound message to reshape your perspective and interactions.

Virtues & Benefits

The regular recitation and reflection upon this ayah are incredibly transformative for our character. By consciously asking Allah to remove *ghill* (malice, envy, resentment) from our hearts, we are actively striving for a heart that embodies **humility**, **compassion**, and a **non-judgmental** spirit towards others. This dua helps us see the good in our fellow believers, to forgive their shortcomings, and to focus on our own rectification rather than scrutinizing others. It is a direct Quranic injunction for us to pray for our community and to build bridges of love and unity, moving away from division and harsh criticism. This prayer strengthens the bonds of faith, fostering an environment where every believer feels valued and free from unwarranted scrutiny, fulfilling the Prophet's ﷺ teaching: "Do not hate one another, and do not be jealous of one another, and do not backbite one another; and be, O slaves of Allah, brethren." (Sahih Muslim 2559).
