O Allah, I seek refuge in You from grief, and I seek refuge in You from helplessness, and I seek refuge in You from laziness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice, and I seek refuge in You from stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and from being overcome by men.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi, wa a'udhu bika minal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni, wa a'udhu bika minal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni, wa qaharir-rijal.
When to Read
This is a powerful supplication that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to recite regularly, particularly after the morning prayer. On the blessed day of Jumu'ah, making it a habit to recite this dua can be a way to actively seek Allah's protection from inner and outer negative influences that can distract us from remembrance, good deeds, and spiritual growth. You can make it a part of your personal routine before or after the congregational prayer, or at any point during the day when you feel the need for Allah's shield.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and deep conviction, picturing Allah's protection enveloping you. Understand each word: seeking refuge from sorrow (hazn), inability (ajz), lethargy (kasal), fear (jubn), and miserliness (buhl). The latter part, seeking refuge from overwhelming debt (ghalabatud-dayn) and the domination of men (qaharur-rijal), highlights seeking freedom from oppressive external pressures. Keep your hands raised slightly as you supplicate, just as the Prophet ﷺ would do, and face the Qiblah if possible, while maintaining your state of humility and reliance on Allah.
Virtues & Benefits
Reciting this dua, as taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, is a comprehensive shield. It protects us from debilitating emotions like grief and fear, spiritual and physical inactivity like helplessness and laziness, and negative character traits like stinginess. Furthermore, it seeks divine intervention against financial hardship and the oppression or overpowering influence of others. By seeking refuge in Allah, we acknowledge His absolute power and our dependence on Him for all forms of safeguarding, especially on a day when our prayers are encouraged to be abundant.
