O Allah, I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and for the deeds which will help me reach Your love. O Allah, make Your love dearer to me than myself, my family, and than cold water.
Allahumma inni as'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wal 'amalalladhi yuballighuni hubbak, Allahumm-aj'al hubbaka ahabba ilayya min nafsi, wa ahli, wa minal-ma'il-barid.
When to Read
This is a beautiful dua to recite on Friday, especially after the obligatory prayers or during the special hours of acceptance on this blessed day. You can make it a part of your personal supplications throughout the day, seeking to deepen your connection with Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him).
How to Read
Recite with sincerity and a sincere heart. Imagine the sweetness of Allah's love filling your being. Focus on each word, understanding its meaning and the immense value of what you are asking for. Raise your hands as you make dua, as is the practice of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and make sure to face the Qiblah if possible.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua directly asks for the highest forms of love: love for Allah, love for those He loves, and the ability to perform actions that lead to His pleasure. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated that loving Allah is a sign of true faith. In another narration, he (peace be upon him) said, 'No servant truly believes until I am dearer to him than his own self, his wealth, his children, and all the people.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 15) By asking for Allah's love to be more beloved than anything else, we are striving for that elevated level of faith.
Source & Authentication
Narrated by Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to supplicate extensively: 'O Allah, I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and for the deeds which will help me reach Your love. O Allah, make Your love dearer to me than myself, my family, and than the cold water.' He was asked about that, and he said: 'The believer loves his Lord the Most.' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3237)
