Seeking Refuge: Dua for Forgiveness of Sins That Lead to Punishment

Forgiveness
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2739

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the demise of Your favor, the sudden change of Your well-being, the unexpectedness of Your vengeance, and all of Your displeasure.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik.

When to Read

This is a powerful supplication to recite regularly, especially after your obligatory prayers. It's particularly poignant when you feel a sense of distance from Allah, or when you reflect on the blessings you've been given and fear losing them due to your shortcomings. It's a proactive way to seek protection from the consequences of sins that might anger Allah.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and full presence of heart. Picture Allah's immense blessings upon you and understand the gravity of losing them. Raising your hands slightly while reciting can enhance the feeling of supplication. It's best recited in Arabic as taught by the Prophet ﷺ, but if you're still learning, focus on understanding its meaning and intent.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a comprehensive shield against the loss of Allah's blessings and well-being. By seeking refuge from the 'demise of Your favor' and 'change of Your well-being,' we acknowledge that all good comes from Allah and can be taken away if we displease Him. The mention of 'unexpectedness of Your vengeance' highlights the need for constant vigilance and repentance, as we don't know when our actions might incur His wrath. Finally, seeking refuge from 'all of Your displeasure' is the ultimate goal – to live a life that pleases our Creator and avoids His anger, which directly prevents the punishment that stems from His displeasure over our sins.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to say: > Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the demise of Your favor, the sudden change of Your well-being, the unexpectedness of Your vengeance, and all of Your displeasure.)
