Seeking Forgiveness for Wronging the Self

Forgiveness
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 3203

O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds, and to abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor. And if You intend to try people with a trial, then take me to Yourself without being tried. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love.

Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'lal khayrat, wa tarkal munkarat, wa hubbal masakin, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan fa tawaffani ghayra maftun. As'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbik.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that can be recited at any time, particularly during the quiet hours of the night or after prayers. It's especially poignant when you feel a pull towards sin or a distance from Allah, reminding yourself of the need for His help to stay on the right path and to cultivate love for Him and good deeds.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart, acknowledging your reliance on Allah for guidance and strength. Reflect on each part of the dua: asking for the ability to do good, avoid evil, and develop compassion for the less fortunate. Most importantly, ask for Allah's love and the love of those who are beloved to Him, and for the love of actions that draw you nearer to Him. It is beneficial to pause after each request and contemplate its meaning.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful supplication for spiritual well-being. It encapsulates asking Allah for the ability to perform righteous actions (fi'lal al-khayrat) and to abstain from forbidden acts (tark al-munkarat). It also cultivates empathy by asking for the love of the poor (hubb al-masakin), reminding us of their plight and our duty towards them. The dua further seeks protection from trials and tribulations (fitnah), asking for a righteous end. The core request is for Allah's love, which is the ultimate aim for a believer, and the love of deeds that lead to His pleasure. Reciting it consistently helps in purifying the heart and aligning one's life with Islamic principles, essentially protecting one's 'nafs' from deviation.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds, and to abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor. And if You intend to try people with a trial, then take me to Yourself without being tried. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love.' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi, Hadith 3203) This hadith, narrated by 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), highlights the Prophet's own supplication for constant spiritual guidance and protection. It shows us that even the best of creation sought Allah's continuous help to remain steadfast.
