Seeking Forgiveness for Sins Committed Under Duress

Forgiveness
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5072

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is forever executed. Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every name belonging to You, which You have named Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or kept secret with You in the knowledge of the unseen: I ask that You make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a banisher of my sadness and a reliever of my worries.

Allahumma inni 'abdak, ibnu 'abdik, ibnu amatik, nasiyatii bi-yadik, madin fiyya hukmuk, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsak, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw anzaltahu fi kitadik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm al-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'al al-Qur'ana rabee'a qalbi, wa noora sadri, wa jalaa'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is particularly relevant when one feels overwhelmed by their sins, especially if they feel they've committed them under pressure or compulsion. How to Read

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to a companion who was struggling with his inability to memorize the Qur'an due to his worries. The Prophet ﷺ instructed him to recite this dua. The essence is sincerity and conviction. Raise your hands as you might do in other supplications, face the Qiblah if possible, and recite with a humble and hopeful heart. Believe that Allah (SWT) has the power to alleviate your distress and forgive your shortcomings, no matter the circumstances under which they occurred.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses seeking Allah's help by His most beautiful names, acknowledging His decree, and asking for the Qur'an to be a source of comfort and guidance. It directly addresses the root of distress – sadness and worries – and seeks their removal through Allah's power and the blessings of His book. The benefit lies in the profound submission to Allah and the reliance on His mercy, which can alleviate the burden of guilt and anxiety, and foster a deeper connection with the divine.
