Seeking Forgiveness for Financial Transgressions

Forgiveness
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 3233

O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds, to abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor. And when You intend to try Your creation, take me to Yourself without putting me through trial. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love.

Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'la khayrat, wa tark munakarat, wa hubb al-masakin, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan fa tawaffani ilayha ghayra maftun. As'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbik.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is excellent to recite daily, especially after Fajr or any prayer. It's particularly relevant when reflecting on one's financial dealings, asking Allah to guide us towards righteous actions, steer us away from wrongdoing (which can include unethical financial practices), and foster a compassionate heart. Recite it when you feel a need to purify your intentions and actions related to wealth and earning.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart. Imagine yourself standing before Allah, seeking His guidance and love. Ensure you are in a state of purity if possible, though the primary focus is the sincerity of the heart. Raise your hands as you normally would for supplication. Contemplate the meaning of each phrase: asking for the ability to do good, to shun what's wrong, to love the less fortunate, and to be protected from trials, ultimately seeking Allah's love and the love of actions that draw you closer to Him.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is profound because it encompasses seeking Allah's help in performing good deeds and avoiding forbidden ones. In the context of financial transactions, this means adhering to honest and fair dealings, avoiding usury (riba), fraud, and exploitation. Loving the poor and needy encourages us to be generous and mindful of those less fortunate, a key aspect of Islamic economics. By asking to be taken without trial during times of fitnah, we seek Allah's mercy to remain steadfast in our faith. Ultimately, the core request is for Allah's love, which is achieved by loving Him, loving those who love Him, and engaging in deeds that bring us nearer to Him. This holistic approach helps purify one's financial life and align it with Islamic values, leading to Allah's pleasure and forgiveness.

Narrated by 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to supplicate: "Allahumma inni as'aluka al-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina." (O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and richness.) And he would also supplicate: "Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'la khayrat, wa tark munakarat, wa hubb al-masakin, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan fa tawaffani ilayha ghayra maftun. As'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbik." (O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds, to abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor. And when You intend to try Your creation, take me to Yourself without putting me through trial. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love.) — Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3233, graded Hasan by the scholars.
