Seeking Allah's Forgiveness for Sins Committed in Youth

Forgiveness
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5997

O Allah, forgive me my mistakes and my ignorance and my extravagance in my affair. O Allah, forgive me my jesting and my seriousness, my mistakes and my deliberate sins, and all of that is with me. O Allah, forgive me what I have sent forth and what I have delayed, what I have concealed and what I have done openly, and what You know better than I. You are the One Who sends forth and You are the One Who delays; there is no god but You.

Allahumma-ghfirli khataayaaya wa jahli, wa israafi fi amri, Allahumma-ghfirli hazli wa jiddi, wa khataayaaya wa 'amdi, wa kullu dhaalika 'indi. Allahumma-ghfirli ma qaddamtu wa ma akhkhartu, wa ma asrartu wa ma a'lantu, wa ma anta a'lamu bihi minni. Antal-muqaddimu wa antal-mu'akhkhiru, laa ilaaha illa anta.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive supplication that can be recited at any time, but it is particularly poignant when reflecting on past actions, especially those committed during youth when judgment might have been less developed. It's a perfect dua to make after obligatory prayers or during times of quiet contemplation, seeking profound forgiveness for all categories of sin.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a sincere intention to turn back to Allah. Raising your hands is part of the etiquette of making dua, as was the practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Reflect deeply on the meaning of each phrase, acknowledging your shortcomings and your complete reliance on Allah's mercy. Believe that Allah will forgive you if you are truthful in your repentance.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua encompasses a request for forgiveness for every type of sin: unintentional mistakes ('khataayaaya'), ignorance ('jahli'), exceeding limits ('israafi'), joking ('hazli'), seriousness ('jiddi'), and deliberate acts (''amdi'). It seeks pardon for actions done in the past, present, and those that might be revealed later. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recited this dua, indicating its immense weight and comprehensive nature. By seeking forgiveness for 'what You know better than I,' we acknowledge Allah's perfect knowledge of our actions and intentions, humbling ourselves before His greatness. It also affirms Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) by concluding with 'there is no god but You,' reinforcing our belief in His sole right to be worshipped and to forgive.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Bakr As-Siddiq: I said to the Prophet ﷺ: 'O Allah's Messenger! Teach me something I can say in the morning and evening.' He said: 'O Allah! Creator of the heavens and the earth, Who knows the unseen and the seen, O my Lord, I ask You in this life and the Hereafter for Your forgiveness and Your protection. O Allah! I ask You to keep me firm in my religion and to grant me well-being in my body, and to keep me with the righteous. O Allah! I ask You for guidance and piety and chastity and richness (of character). O Allah! Forgive me my mistakes and my ignorance and my extravagance in my affair. O Allah! Forgive me my jesting and my seriousness, my mistakes and my deliberate sins, and all of that is with me. O Allah! Forgive me what I have sent forth and what I have delayed, what I have concealed and what I have done openly, and what You know better than I. You are the One Who sends forth and You are the One Who delays; there is no god but You.' He then said to me: 'O Abu Bakr! You should recite these words every morning and evening.'
