Dua for Forgiveness: Overcoming Forgetfulness of Allah's Blessings

Forgiveness
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2739

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, the reversal of Your well-being, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all of Your displeasure.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik.

When to Read

This dua is perfect for any time you feel a sense of spiritual numbness, when blessings seem to fade from your awareness, or when you fear that your actions might displease Allah. It's particularly poignant after performing a good deed, as a way to guard against arrogance and forgetfulness of the true source of that ability. Make it a regular part of your morning and evening remembrance (dhikr).

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart. Raise your hands as you do for other supplications. Visualize Allah's immense blessings upon you, even those you might have overlooked, and feel the weight of His potential displeasure if you were to become ungrateful. Believe that Allah hears your plea and will protect you from what you seek refuge in.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua directly addresses the danger of becoming accustomed to Allah's favors, leading to forgetfulness and ingratitude. By seeking refuge, we acknowledge our dependence on Allah and actively strive to maintain awareness of His constant blessings. This awareness fosters gratitude, strengthens our connection with Him, and protects us from His anger and the loss of His grace. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself taught this, highlighting its importance in preserving faith and well-being.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to seek refuge in Allah with these words: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, the reversal of Your well-being, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all of Your displeasure.)
