Forgiveness
Sahih HadithDa'awat (Supplications) 6306

O Allah, You are my Lord. There is no deity except You. You created me, and I am Your servant, and I am abiding by Your covenant and Your promise as much as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your blessings upon me, and I acknowledge my sins. So forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.

When to Read

When fleeting doubts about Allah's perfect wisdom or justice creep into your heart, reciting this comprehensive dua – known as Sayyid al-Istighfar (the Master of Forgiveness) – is profoundly important. It's a powerful and immediate way to seek forgiveness for such a lapse. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged us to recite it daily, in the morning and evening, making it a regular practice for seeking pardon for all our shortcomings, both known and unknown. Its comprehensive nature makes it suitable for repentance for any slip in our faith or understanding of Allah's attributes, especially those touching upon His ultimate wisdom.

How to Read

To truly internalize and benefit from Sayyid al-Istighfar, recite it with utmost sincerity and a present heart. Understand that you are not just reciting words, but actively engaging in a profound conversation with your Creator. Acknowledge Allah's unique Lordship and your position as His humble servant. Reflect deeply on the covenant you have with Him – your submission and commitment to His commands. As you reach the part, 'I acknowledge my sins,' bring to mind the specific doubt or thought you experienced about Allah's wisdom. Feel genuine remorse for this momentary lapse, and have unwavering conviction that only Allah can truly forgive. Resolve within your heart to strengthen your *iman* (faith) and *tawakkul* (trust in Allah) to prevent such doubts from recurring.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized the immense virtue of Sayyid al-Istighfar. He said: "If somebody recites this invocation during the day with firm faith in it, and dies on the same day before the evening, he will be from the people of Paradise; and if somebody recites it at night with firm faith in it, and dies before the morning, he will be from the people of Paradise" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6306). For someone who has grappled with doubts concerning Allah's wisdom, reciting this dua offers not only the immense promise of Paradise but also immediate spiritual solace. It serves as a profound reaffirmation of faith, helping to cleanse the heart of negative thoughts and strengthen one's certainty in Allah's perfect knowledge, justice, and mercy, ultimately bringing peace and closeness to Him.

Narrated Shaddad bin Aus (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "The most superior way of asking for forgiveness is: 'Allahumma Anta Rabbi la ilaha illa Anta, Khalaqtani wa ana 'abduka, wa ana 'ala 'ahdika wa wa'dika mastata'tu, A'udhu bika min sharri ma sana'tu, abu'u Laka bi ni'matika 'alaiya, wa abu'u bi dhanbi faghfirli fa innahu la yaghfiru adh-dhunuba illa Anta.' The Prophet (peace be upon him) added, "If somebody recites this invocation during the day with firm faith in it, and dies on the same day before the evening, he will be from the people of Paradise; and if somebody recites it at night with firm faith in it, and dies before the morning, he will be from the people of Paradise."
