Dua for Forgiveness of Sins Stemming from Arrogance

Forgiveness
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

O Allah, forgive me for my mistakes and my ignorance, and my extravagance in my affairs, and what You know better about me than I do. O Allah, forgive me for my jesting and my seriousness, and my unintentional and my intentional sins, and my resolve and my jesting, and all of that is with me. O Allah, forgive me for what I have done in the past and what I will do in the future, and what I have concealed and what I have done openly, and what You know better about me than I do. You are the One Who brings forth and the One Who delays, and You have power over all things.

Allahumma-ghfirli khatee'ati wa jahli, wa israafi fi amri, wa ma anta a'lamu bihi minni. Allahumma-ghfirli hazli wa jiddi, wa khata'i wa 'amdi, wa 'azmi wa hazli, wa kullu dhalika 'indi. Allahumma-ghfirli ma qaddamtu wa ma akhkhartu, wa ma asrartu wa ma a'lantu, wa ma anta a'lamu bihi minni. Antal-muqaddimu wa antal-mu'akhkhiru, wa anta 'ala kulli shay'in qadeer.

When to Read

This profound dua is a comprehensive plea for Allah's forgiveness, particularly relevant when we recognize sins committed due to arrogance, ignorance, or overstepping our bounds. It’s a prayer to recite regularly, perhaps after salah, or whenever one feels the weight of their shortcomings. It’s particularly potent when reflecting on times we might have acted superior, dismissed others, or acted without fully considering Allah's commands, stemming from a hidden pride.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and humility, acknowledging your absolute need for Allah's mercy. Raise your hands in supplication, as is the Sunnah for many duas. Feel the weight of the words as you utter them, understanding that Allah alone can grant forgiveness. Imagine yourself standing before Allah, confessing your faults with a contrite heart, seeking His acceptance. It is best to recite this facing the Qiblah, in a state of Wudu if possible, showing reverence.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses a vast spectrum of seeking forgiveness, covering sins done deliberately and accidentally, in seriousness and jest. By reciting it, we are embodying the prophetic guidance on comprehensive repentance. It helps in purifying the heart from the disease of arrogance, a trait Allah dislikes immensely. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recited this dua frequently, highlighting its importance for even the most righteous among us. It reminds us of Allah's infinite power and mercy, and our dependence on Him for both this life and the next. As Allah says, 'And whoever does evil or wrongs himself but then seeks Allah’s forgiveness, he will find Allah Most Forgiving, Very Merciful.' (An-Nisa 4:110).
