اللَّهُمَّ لاَ طَيْرَ إِلاَّ طَيْرُكَ، وَلاَ خَيْرَ إِلاَّ خَيْرُكَ، وَلاَ إِلَهَ غَيْرُكَ
O Allah, there is no omen except Your omen, and no good except Your good, and there is no god other than You.
Allahumma la tayra illa tayruka, wa la khayra illa khayruka, wa la ilaha ghayruka
When to Read
This supplication is particularly relevant when one feels a sense of unease or foreboding based on perceived 'ill omens' – a common human experience, but one that can lead to shirk (associating partners with Allah) if not handled correctly. It's best recited immediately after experiencing such a thought or when trying to ward off superstitious beliefs. It can also be a general remembrance of Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) to strengthen one's conviction against such notions.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and heartfelt conviction. Understand that true good and ill come only from Allah. Recognize that any perceived omen is merely a coincidence and not a cause of benefit or harm in itself. It's a declaration of reliance on Allah alone, rejecting any power that others might attribute to signs or superstitions. Repeat it as needed to reinforce your belief.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua directly counters the belief in 'tiyarah' (believing in ill omens), which is a form of minor shirk. By reciting this, a Muslim affirms Allah's absolute control over all matters. It purifies one's heart from superstition and strengthens Tawhid. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that believing in ill omens has no basis and can lead to distress and deviation from the right path. Reciting this serves as a shield against such whispers of the Shaytan and a reminder of Allah's complete power and providence.
Source & Authentication
The narration concerning this dua comes from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) who narrated that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "Tiyarah (believing in ill omens) is shirk. Tiyarah is shirk. Tiyarah is shirk. And none of us is safe from it, but rather (we are saved from it) by relying on Allah (tawakkul). When you find something you dislike, you should say: 'Allahumma la tayra illa tayruka, wa la khayra illa khayruka, wa la ilaha ghayruka.'" (Musnad Ahmad 17143). Other related narrations mention that the Prophet ﷺ disliked such superstitions and would say, "If it is a bad omen, it is nothing," or "The only thing that leads to good or bad is Allah." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5753, Sahih Muslim 2224).
