‘Aa’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I did not find the Messenger of Allah ﷺ praying any voluntary (nafl) prayer sitting, until he grew stout. And when he offered voluntary prayer sitting, he would recite the Quran in a state of standing (in terms of his recitation) and when he recited (the Quran) bowing, he would perform Ruku' (in bowing) and when he would prostrate, he would perform his prostration until he would say himself: (Allahumma-ghfir li khatee'atee kulla-ha, diqqaha wa jilla-ha, awwa-laha wa aakhira-ha, wa 'alaaniyataha wa sirra-ha) 'O Allah, forgive me my sin entirely, its minor and major, its first and last, and its public and private.' And when he would raise his head from prostration, he would exalt Allah until he would finish his prayer, and he would be saying in the same way in his prostration.
