Dua for Forgiveness of Sins Committed While Gazing

Forgiveness
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, the change of Your well-being, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that You are displeased with. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow. I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness. I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess. And I seek refuge in You from being overcome by debt and being subjugated by men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is particularly relevant when one feels remorse for past sins, including those committed through heedless gazing at what is impermissible. It's a dua to turn to whenever we feel the weight of our transgressions and wish to actively seek Allah's protection from further missteps and His displeasure. Reciting it regularly, especially after noticing a lapse in our conduct, can serve as a powerful reminder and a means of seeking refuge.

How to Read

This dua is best recited with sincerity and a present heart. Imagine yourself truly seeking refuge in Allah (SWT) from these profound afflictions. Raising your hands is a recommended etiquette for supplication, though not strictly required for this specific narration. Ensure you are in a state of purity if possible, though the emphasis is on the sincerity of your intention and your words.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a broad request for Allah's protection, covering spiritual, emotional, and practical aspects of life. By seeking refuge from the 'cessation of Your blessings' and 'change of Your well-being,' we acknowledge our dependence on Allah for everything good. The specific mention of 'distress and sorrow,' 'incapacity and laziness,' 'cowardice and stinginess,' and 'debt and subjugation' highlights the Prophet's ﷺ concern for the comprehensive well-being of his Ummah. For sins committed through gazing, this dua helps us seek refuge from the *root causes* (like laziness or lack of self-control) and the *consequences* (like distress and Allah's displeasure), while also asking for forgiveness and protection against such lapses.
