O Allah, forgive me for all of my sins, the minor and the major, the first and the last, the apparent and the hidden, the outward and the inward.
Allahumma-ghfirli dhanbi kullahu, diqqahu wa jillahu, awwalahu wa akhirahu, 'alaniyatahu wa sirrahu, wa dhahirahu wa baatinahu.
When to Read
This comprehensive supplication is best recited in the latter part of the night, during the pre-dawn hours (sahar) when Allah descends to the lowest heaven. It can also be recited after any obligatory or voluntary prayer, or at any time you remember your shortcomings and seek sincere repentance.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincere intention and a contrite heart. Raise your hands in supplication, facing the Qiblah if possible. Believe firmly that Allah is Al-Ghafur (The All-Forgiving) and Al-Rahim (The Most Merciful), and that He will accept your repentance. Emphasize each part of the dua, recognizing the vast scope of sins it encompasses – from the seemingly small thoughts and desires of the heart (diqqahu) to the major transgressions (jillahu), from the very first sins we committed to the most recent (awwalahu wa akhirahu), those done openly (alaniyatahu) and those done in secret (sirrahu), and finally, the sins that manifest outwardly (dhahirahu) and those that remain hidden within our inner selves (baatinahu).
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is a powerful tool for seeking comprehensive forgiveness. By asking Allah to forgive sins of all types and scopes – minor, major, past, present, hidden, and apparent – we are essentially seeking a complete cleansing. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to his companions, highlighting its importance in achieving sincere repentance and drawing closer to Allah. It reflects a deep awareness of our human fallibility and a heartfelt plea for divine mercy, a cornerstone of our relationship with our Creator.

Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite in Ruku' (bowing) and Sujud (prostration): "Subhanak Allahumma wa bihamdika, Allahumma-ghfir li." (Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. O Allah, forgive me.) And he used to interpret the Quran. And he recited: 'Allahumma-ghfir li dhanbi kullahu, diqqahu wa jillahu, awwalahu wa akhirahu, 'alaniyatahu wa sirrahu, wa dhahirahu wa baatinahu.' (O Allah, forgive me for all of my sins, the minor and the major, the first and the last, the apparent and the hidden, the outward and the inward.)
