Dua for Forgiveness of Sins Committed in Ignorance or Confusion

Forgiveness
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

O Allah, forgive me my mistakes, my ignorance, my excesses in my affairs, and whatever You know better about me. O Allah, forgive me my joking and my seriousness, my unintentional and my intentional sins, my resolve and my jesting, and all of that is with me.

Allahumma-ghfirli khatee'ati, wa jahli, wa israafi fi amri, wa ma anta a'lamu bihi minni. Allahumma-ghfirli hazli wa jiddi, wa khata'i wa 'amdi, wa 'azmi wa hazli, wa kullu dhalika 'indi.

This powerful dua is suitable for recitation at any time, but it's particularly poignant when you feel overwhelmed by past missteps or when seeking clarity after acting impulsively. Recite it after salah, during the night, or at any moment you turn to Allah for mercy and guidance. It's a comprehensive plea that covers the spectrum of human error.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, acknowledging your shortcomings before Allah. It’s recommended to raise your hands slightly, as is customary when making dua. Believe in Allah's mercy and His ability to forgive all sins, no matter how grave they may seem.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself to his companion 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), is incredibly comprehensive. It seeks forgiveness for sins committed through genuine error ('khata'i'), ignorance ('jahli'), and even those done intentionally but in a state of confusion or being overwhelmed ('israafi fi amri', 'amdi'). It acknowledges that Allah knows our weaknesses better than we do, seeking His forgiveness for both lighthearted mistakes and serious transgressions. Its recitation is a profound act of self-reflection and reliance on Allah's boundless forgiveness.

Source & Authentication

Narrated 'Abdullah: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud, I will recite to you a recitation which is better than the necklace of jewels for you.' 'Umar said, 'O Allah's Messenger! Would you recite it to 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud?' The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'Yes.' So he recited: 'Allahumma-ghfirli khatee'ati, wa jahli, wa israafi fi amri, wa ma anta a'lamu bihi minni. Allahumma-ghfirli hazli wa jiddi, wa khata'i wa 'amdi, wa 'azmi wa hazli, wa kullu dhalika 'indi.' (O Allah, forgive me my mistakes, my ignorance, my excesses in my affairs, and whatever You know better about me. O Allah, forgive me my joking and my seriousness, my unintentional and my intentional sins, my resolve and my jesting, and all of that is with me.)
