Dua for Forgiveness and Divine Cover from Humiliation

Forgiveness
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 2714

O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my faults and secure me from what makes me anxious. O Allah, protect me from before me and behind me, from my right and from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your Magnificence from being struck from beneath me.

Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyata fi deeni wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali. Allahumma-stur 'awrati wa aamin raw'ati. Allahumma-hfizni min bayni yadayya wa min khalfi, wa 'an yameeni wa 'an shimali, wa min fawqi, wa a'udhu bi 'azamatika an ughtala min tahti.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that can be recited at any time, but it is particularly beneficial during the times when supplications are more likely to be answered, such as after prayers, during the last third of the night, between the Adhan and Iqamah, or when feeling particularly vulnerable or in need of Allah's protection and forgiveness. Reciting it regularly can help foster a mindset of seeking Allah's mercy and protection daily.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, believing in Allah's power to grant forgiveness and protection. It's recommended to raise your hands slightly while making dua, as is the Sunnah. Start by praising Allah and sending Salawat upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Then, recite the dua, focusing on each part: seeking forgiveness ('afw) and well-being ('afiyah), asking for protection over your religion, life, family, and wealth, and seeking cover for your faults and protection from all directions.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses seeking Allah's forgiveness for sins and the 'afiyah, which means being protected from all forms of harm, both physically and spiritually. 'Afiyah includes protection from trials, diseases, difficulties, and humiliation. By asking Allah to 'conceal our faults' and 'secure us from what makes us anxious,' we are seeking protection from the shame and disgrace that come from our sins being exposed. The comprehensive protection sought from all directions, including from beneath, highlights the completeness of Allah's safeguarding power. This dua helps build reliance on Allah and mitigates the fear of worldly humiliation by focusing on His ultimate protection.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): He said, 'Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) never used to abandon these supplications when evening came or when morning arrived: O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my faults and secure me from what makes me anxious. O Allah, protect me from before me and behind me, from my right and from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your Magnificence from being struck from beneath me.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 2714)
