A Supplication for Forgiveness of Sins of the Eye

Forgiveness
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3846

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the passing away of Your favors, and from the change of Your protection, and from the suddenness of Your punishment, and from all that displeets You. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the destruction of misfortunes, and I seek refuge in You from the evil day, and from the evil night, and I seek refuge in You from the evil hour, and I seek refuge in You from an event I am in. And I seek refuge in You from betrayal, and I seek refuge in You from an evil sight concerning my family and my property. O Allah, I ask You for success at the time of decree, and the stations of martyrs, and the life of the happy, and victory over enemies. O Allah, I present my need to You, even if my opinion is weak and my actions are feeble. So enrich me with Your bounty against the richness of Your creation, and upon that I have relied. O Allah, make my sight for You, and not for others, and make my heart for You, and not for others, and make my limbs for You, and not for others. My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself with much wrong, and none forgives sins except You, so forgive me with forgiveness from You, and have mercy on me. Indeed, You are the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faj'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhathik. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min hadmi hawadithis-su', wa a'udhu bika min yawmis-su', wa min laylatis-su', wa a'udhu bika min sa'atis-su', wa a'udhu bika min hadithin ana fihi, wa a'udhu bika min ghadrah, wa a'udhu bika min su'il-manzari fi ahli wa mali. Allahumma inni as'alukal-fawza 'indal-qada', wa manazilish-shuhada', wa 'ayshas-su'ada', wan-nasra 'alal-a'da'. Allahumma inni unzilu bika hajati wa in qasura ra'yi wa da'ufa 'amali, fa aghnini bifadlik 'an ghina khalqik, wa 'ala dhalika tawakkaltu.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is suitable for recitation at any time, especially after realizing one has looked at impermissible things. It's a powerful prayer to seek Allah's protection from straying and to ask for His forgiveness and mercy for any lapses.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, believing in Allah's power to protect and forgive. It is best recited after performing Wudu (ablution) and facing the Qiblah (direction of prayer), though it can be recited anywhere. Reflect on each phrase, truly seeking refuge in Allah and acknowledging your dependence on Him. Repeating it regularly can help strengthen your resolve against temptation.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication covers seeking refuge from various misfortunes and evils, including those that affect one's sight and property. It highlights the importance of directing all actions, thoughts, and limbs towards Allah. The latter part of the dua is a direct plea for forgiveness, acknowledging one's shortcomings and seeking Allah's encompassing mercy, which is essential after succumbing to looking at impermissible things. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us to seek refuge in Allah from all forms of evil, and this dua is a comprehensive way to do so.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to supplicate: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faj'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhathik. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min hadmi hawadithis-su', wa a'udhu bika min yawmis-su', wa min laylatis-su', wa a'udhu bika min sa'atis-su', wa a'udhu bika min hadithin ana fihi, wa a'udhu bika min ghadrah, wa a'udhu bika min su'il-manzari fi ahli wa mali. Allahumma inni as'alukal-fawza 'indal-qada', wa manazilish-shuhada', wa 'ayshas-su'ada', wan-nasra 'alal-a'da'. Allahumma inni unzilu bika hajati wa in qasura ra'yi wa da'ufa 'amali, fa aghnini bifadlik 'an ghina khalqik, wa 'ala dhalika tawakkaltu.' (This part focuses on seeking refuge and asking for worldly and otherworldly needs. The following is a separate supplication taught for forgiveness). Another supplication of the Prophet (peace be upon him) for forgiveness is: 'Rabb inni zalamtu nafsi zulman kathiran, wa la yaghfirudh-dhunuba illa anta, faghfir li maghfiratan min 'indik, war-hamni innaka antal-Ghafurur-Rahim.' (O my Lord, I have wronged myself greatly, and none forgives sins but You. So forgive me with forgiveness from You and have mercy upon me. Verily, You are the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.)
