A Powerful Dua for Forgiveness After Falling to Weakness

Forgiveness
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 771

O Allah, indeed I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is inevitable, and Your justice in my case is an evidence. I ask You by every name belonging to You, which You have revealed in Your Book, or You have taught to any one of Your creation, or You have kept exclusively for Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a departure for my sadness and a remover of my worries.

Allahumma inni 'abduk, ibnu 'abdik, ibnu amatik, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukkumuk, 'adlun fiyya qada'uk, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak sammayta bihi nafsak, aw anzaltahu fi kitâbik, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabî'a qalbî, wa nûra sadri, wa jali'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

When to Read

This is a profound dua for any time you feel regret over past sins or find yourself succumbing to weakness and temptation. Recite it when you are feeling overwhelmed by your shortcomings, or after a specific instance where you faltered. It's particularly potent when you are seeking a deeper connection with Allah and a sincere intention to reform.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and humility. Understand that you are acknowledging Allah's absolute power and sovereignty over you. When you say 'My forelock is in Your hand,' picture yourself completely in Allah's control, with no power or agency of your own. Make a firm resolution to turn away from sin and to actively seek Allah's guidance. It's best recited when you are in a state of quiet reflection, perhaps after salah.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua powerfully consolidates your reliance on Allah by invoking Him through His many beautiful names, many of which are known only to Him. It seeks to transform your heart by making the Qur'an its 'springtime' – the source of life, growth, and renewal. By asking for the Qur'an to be the light of your chest, you're asking for clarity, understanding, and conviction. This, in turn, is presented as the direct antidote to sadness and worry. It’s a comprehensive request for spiritual well-being and a strong plea for forgiveness rooted in a deep understanding of Allah’s attributes.

Source & Authentication

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to teach his Companions, 'Our Lord, our Lord,' in the same way as he taught them a Surah from the Qur'an, and he said: 'Do you know what you say: 'Our Lord, our Lord'?' They said: 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said: 'Verily, no servant says: 'Our Lord, our Lord,' three times, but it is said to him: 'You have been helped, you have been made secure, you have been guided.' And then Satan falls down weeping and says: 'Woe unto me! All my efforts in bringing man to destruction have been frustrated in these three things through which they will attain salvation.' Then he mentioned the three things: 'A servant who turns to Allah from any temptation that may have afflicted him, and seeks refuge in Allah with sincere repentance, and the person who, when he is put to trial, says: 'Our Lord, our Lord, I ask You for Your best and the best of what You have ordained for us, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of what You have ordained for us, and from the evil of what is therein.' And the servant who says: 'O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is inevitable, and Your justice in my case is an evidence. I ask You by every name belonging to You, which You have revealed in Your Book, or You have taught to any one of Your creation, or You have kept exclusively for Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a departure for my sadness and a remover of my worries.'
