A Plea for Forgiveness After Erring with Hearing

Forgiveness
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 589

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and from the punishment of the Fire, and from the trial of wealth and poverty, and from the trial of the grave, and from the evil of the trial of the Dajjal. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, and from the evil of my sight, and from the evil of my tongue, and from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my desires/semen.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabr, wa min 'adhab an-nar, wa min fitnat al-ghina wal-faqr, wa min fitnat al-qabr, wa sharri fitnat ad-dajjal. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri sam'i, wa min sharri basari, wa min sharri lisani, wa min sharri qalbi, wa min sharri maniyyi.

When to Read

This dua is comprehensive and can be recited at any time, especially when reflecting on past mistakes. It's particularly poignant after realizing you've misused your sense of hearing by listening to prohibited things, such as music with inappropriate lyrics, gossip, or backbiting. Reciting it in the morning and evening, as is the Sunnah for many supplications, would be beneficial.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a true desire to turn back to Allah. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, acknowledging your weaknesses and seeking Allah's protection. It's best recited when you are in a state of purity (wudu) and facing the Qiblah, though these are not strict conditions if you are seeking refuge at any moment.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful supplication encompasses seeking protection from major trials and seeking refuge from the misuse of our faculties. By specifically asking for protection from 'the evil of my hearing' (min sharri sam'i), we are directly addressing the sin of listening to what is forbidden. This is a proactive step towards purifying our actions and seeking Allah's forgiveness for any transgressions made through this sense. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this comprehensive dua, indicating its immense value in safeguarding ourselves and seeking Allah's mercy.
