A Dua for Protection Against Trials Caused by Our Sins

Forgiveness
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2710

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, and the reversal of Your well-being, and the sudden affliction of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have sent forth, and from the evil of what I have held back.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhitik. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri ma qaddamt, wa min sharri ma amsakt.

When to Read

This comprehensive supplication can be recited at any time, especially when you feel you might have strayed or when facing difficulties that seem to stem from your own shortcomings. It's particularly potent when seeking protection before embarking on something new or after a period of reflection.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a present heart. Raise your hands slightly, as was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ when making supplication. Believe in Allah's power to protect you and forgive your sins. It is also beneficial to combine this with sincere repentance and efforts to amend your ways.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a profound seeking of refuge in Allah from various forms of His displeasure and punishment. It acknowledges that trials and tribulations can be a consequence of our actions, both those we have committed ('sent forth') and those we have failed to do or have delayed ('held back'). By seeking refuge, we are not just asking for a change in circumstances, but for protection from the underlying spiritual causes of hardship, which often originate from our own sins and negligence.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, and the reversal of Your well-being, and the sudden affliction of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have sent forth, and from the evil of what I have held back." (Sahih Muslim 2710)
