O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds, and to abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor, and that You forgive me and have mercy on me. And when You intend to test a people, take me to Yourself without being tested. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which will bring me closer to Your love.

Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'l al-khayrat, wa tark al-munkarat, wa hubb al-masakin, wa an taghfir li wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta bi-qawmin fitnatan fa tawaffani ilayka ghayra maftun. As'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuka, wa hubba 'amal yuqarribuni ila hubbik.

This comprehensive dua is perfect for recitation at any time, especially during the quiet hours of the night or after prayers. It's particularly relevant when you feel a distance from righteousness or are concerned about the impact of sins on your journey to Jannah. Making it a regular part of your supplications can help realign your intentions and actions with Allah's pleasure.

How to Read

Recite with sincerity and a sincere heart, focusing on the meaning of each phrase. Raise your hands in supplication as is the custom, and face the Qiblah if possible. Believe firmly in Allah's ability to answer your prayers and forgive your sins.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses seeking Allah's help in performing good deeds and abstaining from evil, which are the very essence of pleasing Him and a direct path to Jannah. It also includes a request for love – Allah's love, the love of those who love Him, and the love of deeds that bring one closer to Him. This spiritual 'love' is a powerful motivator for consistent worship and good conduct. Furthermore, it includes a plea for forgiveness and mercy, and a request to be saved from trials and tribulations that could lead one astray. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to his companions, highlighting its profound importance for spiritual well-being and ultimate success.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him). Abu Bakr said: 'O Messenger of Allah, teach me a dua that I may recite in my prayer.' He said: 'Say: O Allah, I have wronged myself greatly, and none can forgive sins except You. So forgive me with forgiveness from Yourself, and have mercy on me. Verily, You are the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.' (Allahumma inni zalamtu nafsi zulman kathiran, wa la yaghfirudh-dhunuba illa anta, faghfirli maghfiratan min 'indik, warhamni, innaka antal Ghafurur Rahim). And when Abu Bakr's conditions changed (referring to the part of the hadith about asking for good deeds, abandoning evil, loving the poor, and being taken without tribulation), the Prophet ﷺ taught him: 'Say: O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds, and to abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor, and that You forgive me and have mercy on me. And when You intend to test a people, take me to Yourself without being tested. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which will bring me closer to Your love.'
