A Du'a for Forgiveness of Hidden and Apparent Sins

Forgiveness
Sahih HadithThe Book of Traveler's Prayer 771

O Allah, forgive me for what I have sent forth and what I have held back, what I have done in secret and what I have done openly, and what I have exceeded in, and what You know better than I do. You are the Advancer, and You are the Delayer. There is no god but You.

When to Read

This profound supplication was recited by the Prophet ﷺ at the end of his prayer, before giving the salutation (taslim). While it holds special significance when said in this particular moment during Salah, its comprehensive nature makes it suitable for seeking forgiveness at any time of day, whenever you turn to Allah for pardon.

How to Read

Recite this du'a with a heart full of sincerity and humility, contemplating the breadth of its meaning. Acknowledge that Allah knows all your deeds, both those you committed openly and those hidden from others, even those you might have forgotten or underestimated. Focus on seeking Allah's vast forgiveness and mercy, recognizing His unique attributes as 'the Advancer' and 'the Delayer'.

Virtues & Benefits

The virtue of this du'a lies in its comprehensive plea for forgiveness, covering every conceivable type of sin: those committed in the past (ما قدمت), those yet to be committed or held back (ما أخرت), those done secretly (ما أسررت), openly (ما أعلنت), those in which we exceeded limits (ما أسرفت), and even those known only to Allah. The Prophet ﷺ himself made this supplication, highlighting its importance in seeking Allah's pardon. By reciting it, you affirm Allah's unique attributes and His absolute knowledge, while seeking His boundless mercy for a thorough cleansing of your record.

Source & Authentication

It is narrated on the authority of 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to say at the end of his prayer before pronouncing salutation: 'O Allah, forgive me for what I have sent forth and what I have held back, and what I have done in secret and what I have done openly, and what I have exceeded in, and what You know better than I do. You are the Advancer, and You are the Delayer. There is no god but You.'
