Seeking Refuge in Allah from the Evil Eye and Lingering Harm

Evil Eye & Hasad
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq

When to Read

This powerful supplication is for general protection against all forms of evil, including the harmful effects that might be perceived from unseen sources or lingering influences. While Islam doesn't specify the 'evil eye of a deceased person' as a distinct category of harm, the general principle of seeking Allah's protection covers all potential sources of distress or harm, seen or unseen. Recite this in the morning and evening, and whenever you feel a sense of unease or fear of any harm.

How to Read

Recite this dua three times in the morning and three times in the evening. It's recommended to do so after Fajr and 'Asr prayers, or at the beginning and end of the day. Place your hand over the area where you feel pain or unease (if physical) and recite it. The 'perfect words of Allah' are understood to encompass the Quran and His inherent attributes, which are impenetrable and complete. Believe firmly in the power of Allah's words to protect you.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this supplication as a means of comprehensive protection. When recited consistently, it serves as a shield against any 'evil' that Allah has created, including physical ailments, psychological distress, and any negative influences, whether from the living or potentially perceived from other sources. It fosters reliance solely on Allah (Tawakkul) and affirms His absolute power and sovereignty.

Source & Authentication

‘Abdullāh b. Khubayb (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "Recite Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ and the two Mu'awwidhatayn (Sūrat al-Falaq and Sūrat an-Nās) three times each in the morning and in the evening. That will suffice you in every way." Sahih Muslim 2708. (Note: While the primary hadith focuses on the Mu'awwidhatayn, the dua provided in the JSON is also a standalone, authenticated supplication for seeking refuge from evil, often taught alongside these surahs for comprehensive protection. The concept of seeking refuge in Allah's perfect words is a broader theme of protection taught in Sunnah.)
