When to Read

This beautiful dua is specifically for when you witness something amazing – a person's beautiful home, their healthy children, a successful business, or any other blessing from Allah. Instead of letting envy or even unmindful admiration take hold, which can inadvertently harm the blessed person, you recite this dua to affirm Allah's blessings and protect both yourself and the one you admire.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely when you see something that impresses you. Say it with the intention of seeking Allah's blessing for the person and for your own heart to be free from envy. It's a simple yet profound way to turn admiration into a positive act of seeking good for others.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua is a sunnah practice and a powerful shield. It prevents the potential harm of the evil eye stemming from sincere (but unmindful) admiration. It also fosters a spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood among Muslims, acknowledging that all blessings are from Allah and wishing well for His creation. It cultivates gratitude and contentment in your own life, as you focus on wishing the best for others.

Source & Authentication

Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'When one of you beholds his brother's fellow man or his property, let him invoke Allah's blessing upon him, for the evil eye is a reality.' Narrated by Abu 'Abdullah, Muhammad ibn Isma'il ibn Ibrahim ibn al-Mughirah ibn al-Akhnas al-Bukhari, and by Ahmad ibn Yunus, and by Abu Musa Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna. The traditions of Ibn Majah, and Abu Dawud, and Ibn Hibban and al-Hakim and Ibn as-Sunni have transmitted it. It is in the collection of Muslim in the chapter on invoking blessings. Abu Dawud said: 'Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'When one of you admires his brother or his property, let him invoke Allah's blessings on him, for it is not but the evil eye.' This hadith, as reported by Ibn 'Abbas and Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib (may Allah be pleased with them), emphasizes the reality of the evil eye, even when it arises from admiration rather than malice. The Prophet ﷺ provided us with a specific dua to counter this, turning a potentially harmful situation into a beneficial one for both parties.
