Supplication for Clarity and Discernment at Dusk

Evening Adhkar
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 7

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا.

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, pure provisions, and deeds that are accepted.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.

When to Read

This beautiful supplication is specifically recommended to be recited after the Asr prayer, as the day begins to fade into dusk. It’s a moment of transition, a perfect time to reflect on the day's actions and seek Allah's guidance for what is to come, especially as the evening sets in.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and focus. Raise your hands in supplication as you would for any other dua. Ensure you pronounce the Arabic words correctly, understanding the meaning behind them. Imagine yourself asking Allah for these three essential things: knowledge that benefits, sustenance that is pure and lawful, and actions that are pleasing to Him. Doing so after Asr prayer is a sunnah practice.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates seeking the best of both worlds: spiritual and material. Beneficial knowledge guides us in our worship and daily life. Pure provisions sustain us and our families without the burden of unlawful earnings. Accepted deeds are those done sincerely for Allah's sake, which He rewards. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua as a comprehensive request, especially fitting for the reflective period at dusk after the day's work and prayers.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to say after he had prayed, if he remained in his place of prayer: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.'
