Seeking Refuge from Hypocrisy and Shirk: An Evening Invocation for Sincerity

Evening Adhkar
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1549

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the discontinuation of Your blessings, and the reversal of the wellness You granted, and the suddenness of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure. And I seek refuge in You from the trial of wealth, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of poverty. And I seek refuge in You from the trial of the grave and the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Fire and the punishment of the Fire. And I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of my sight, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of my tongue, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of my heart, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of my sexual fluid.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fu'jati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-ghina, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-faqr, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-qabri wa 'adhabil-qabr, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatin-nari wa 'adhabin-nar, wa a'udhu bika min sharri sam'i, wa a'udhu bika min sharri basari, wa a'udhu bika min sharri lisani, wa a'udhu bika min sharri qalbi, wa a'udhu bika min sharri maniyyi.

When to Read

This is a powerful invocation to be recited in the evening, ideally after the Asr prayer or before going to sleep. It's part of the general remembrance of Allah (dhikr) that protects us throughout the night and prepares us for the new day with a pure heart.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a focused heart, reflecting on the meanings of each plea. Visualize seeking Allah's protection from these specific evils and trials. It's best recited when you are calm and able to concentrate.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua covers seeking refuge from both worldly and otherworldly trials. Specifically, it guards against the subtle dangers of hypocrisy (showing off one's deeds for worldly gain, which is a form of shirk al-khafi, or hidden polytheism) and protects against the more overt forms of shirk. It also seeks protection from trials that can afflict us in wealth, poverty, in the grave, and in the Hereafter, as well as from the evil that can arise from our own senses and desires, ultimately purifying our intentions and actions.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught this comprehensive supplication to his companions. It is narrated that Al-Mugirah ibn Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to say after the prayer: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi jahannam, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabr, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatid-dajjal, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat." (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Dajjal, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of life and death)." (Sahih Muslim 589). The version used here is a more extensive and encompassing supplication for protection against various forms of trials and evils, including those related to intention and sincerity, found in Sunan Abi Dawud and Sunan An-Nasa'i.
