Say, 'I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak, from the evil of whatever He has created, and from the evil of darkness when it settles, and from the evil of those who practice sorcery and blow on knots, and from the evil of the envier when he envies.'
Qul a'udhu bi-rabbi-l-falaq, min sharri ma khalaq, wa min sharri ghasiqin idha waqab, wa min sharri-n-naffathati fi-l-'uqad, wa min sharri hasidin idha hasad.
When to Read
This Surah is highly recommended for recitation every evening as a powerful means of seeking Allah's protection. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ specifically advised its recitation in the evening, alongside Surah An-Nas, for seeking refuge. It's a beautiful way to end your day, entrusting yourself to Allah's care against all visible and hidden evils.
How to Read
Recite Surah Al-Falaq once in the evening. Following the practice of the Prophet ﷺ, you can recite it along with Surah An-Nas and Surah Al-Ikhlas. After reciting all three, you would then blow softly into your palms and wipe them over your entire body, starting with your head and face, and repeating this three times. This is a sunnah practice directly taught by the Prophet ﷺ for protection.
Virtues & Benefits
Reciting Surah Al-Falaq in the evening is a profound act of seeking refuge in Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said regarding the Mu'awwidhatayn (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas): 'No one seeks refuge with the like of these two and nothing else.' (Sahih Muslim 814). He also taught us that reciting them provides comprehensive protection against all sorts of evil, including sorcery, envy, and the darkness of night.
