أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ
I seek forgiveness from Allah and I turn to Him in repentance.
Astaghfirullaha wa atubu ilaih
When to Read
This is a general supplication for seeking forgiveness that can be recited at any time, but it is particularly emphasized as a practice for the evening, especially after Asr prayer or as one prepares for sleep. It's a beautiful way to reflect on the day's deeds and seek Allah's mercy before the night fully sets in. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged seeking forgiveness frequently, and the evening is a potent time for this reflection.
How to Read
Recite this simple yet profound dua with sincerity and a conscious awareness of your reliance on Allah. While there isn't a strict number prescribed for this specific wording, the Sunnah encourages abundant seeking of forgiveness. Focus on the meaning – acknowledging your shortcomings and turning back to your Lord. It can be recited on the go, before sleep, or as part of your evening remembrance (dhikr).
Virtues & Benefits
The act of seeking forgiveness (istighfar) is a cornerstone of a Muslim's life, a constant reminder of our human fallibility and Allah's infinite mercy. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, despite being guaranteed Paradise, would seek Allah's forgiveness over seventy times a day, sometimes even one hundred times. Reciting 'Astaghfirullaha wa atubu ilaih' encapsulates both seeking pardon for past wrongdoings and resolving to avoid them in the future. Allah, the Most High, promises ease and provision for those who consistently seek His forgiveness: 'And, [O my people], seek forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him, [and He] will let you enjoy good provision for a specified term and give every doer of favor his favor. But if you turn away, then indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a great Day.' (Hud 11:3). Furthermore, istighfar is a means of drawing closer to Allah and is mentioned as a practice that can lead to increased blessings and the fulfillment of needs.
