It is recommended to do so before you sleep. Let your heart be present as you utter these words, trusting in Allah's power to safeguard you.
Virtues & Benefits
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this dua as a means of seeking comprehensive protection. When recited in the evening, as mentioned in the hadith, it acts as a shield against all forms of evil that may descend or arise during the night. More profoundly, it serves as a spiritual armor against the trials and tribulations of the grave, a terrifying reality for every soul. By seeking refuge in Allah's perfect words, we acknowledge His absolute power over all creation and His ability to protect us from its potential harms, both in this life and the next.
Source & Authentication
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When night falls, wait until the evening prayer, then say it three times. If you die that night, you will have died in a state of fitrah (natural disposition). When morning comes, say it three times. If you encounter him that night, he will not be able to harm you.' (Sahih Muslim 2708). The context implies seeking refuge from various dangers that can befall one during the night, extending to the ultimate trials after death, which include the grave.
