Seeking Allah's Help for Debts and Obligations Before Night

Evening Adhkar
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, the reversal of Your protection, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all of Your displeasure. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, incapacity and laziness, cowardice and stinginess, the burden of debt and the oppression of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhitik. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa ghalabatid-dayni wa qahri ar-rijal.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely in the evening, ideally after Salat al-Maghrib or as you settle down for the night. Focus on the meaning of each phrase and the specific types of refuge you are seeking from Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala).

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses seeking refuge from several profound difficulties. The specific mention of 'the burden of debt and the oppression of men' (غَلَبَةِ الدَّيْنِ وَقَهْرِ الرِّجَالِ) directly addresses the anxiety and helplessness that can arise from financial struggles and being overwhelmed by others. By seeking Allah's protection, we ask for His assistance in managing our finances, fulfilling our duties, and safeguarding ourselves from the severe distress these issues can cause, especially as night falls and worries can magnify.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to seek refuge with Allah from the Jinn and the evil eyes of men. But when the Quran was revealed, he gave up seeking refuge with them and took to the recitation of the Quran's refuge-seeking spells. (Sahih al-Bukhari 6306). The part about seeking refuge from debt and oppression is found in other narrations, for example: Narrated Anas: The Prophet ﷺ used to say, 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, helplessness and laziness, cowardice and miserliness, the overpowering of debt and the subjugation of men.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5425). This specific phrasing is found in multiple authentic collections.
