Seeking Allah's Acceptance of Evening Deeds and Protection

Evening Adhkar
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 925

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلاً مُتَقَبَّلاً

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and deeds that are accepted.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan

When to Read

This beautiful supplication is part of the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ morning and evening remembrance (adhkar). Reciting it after Fajr (dawn) and Asr (afternoon) prayers is a recommended practice. It's a comprehensive request, asking for the best of this life and the hereafter.

How to Read

Recite with sincerity and conviction, reflecting on each part of the dua. 'Ilman nafi'an' refers to knowledge that benefits the mind and soul, leading to righteous action. 'Rizqan tayyiban' is provision that is pure, lawful, and brings contentment. 'Amalan mutaqabbalan' is the most crucial part for us here – asking for our deeds, big or small, to be accepted by Allah. This requires us to strive for sincerity (ikhlas) and follow the Sunnah in our worship and actions. Think of the deeds you've done throughout the day, especially those you hope to count towards your evening prayer and acts of worship, and ask Allah to accept them.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses seeking the ultimate good: knowledge that guides us, sustenance that sustains us lawfully, and actions that are pleasing to our Creator. Its inclusion in the Prophet's ﷺ daily routine highlights its importance. By asking for accepted deeds, we are acknowledging our reliance on Allah's mercy, understanding that mere action without His acceptance yields no lasting reward. It’s a reminder that our efforts are only valuable if they are met with divine approval.

Source & Authentication

The Hadith narrates that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would say when he finished the Fajr (dawn) prayer: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.' (O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and deeds that are accepted). The same is reported for the Asr (afternoon) prayer.
