Evening Salawat Upon the Prophet ﷺ

Evening Adhkar
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 589

O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent prayers upon Abraham and upon the family of Abraham. You are indeed Praiseworthy and Glorious. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Abraham and upon the family of Abraham. You are indeed Praiseworthy and Glorious.

When to Read

This specific formulation of salawat is recommended to be recited in the evening and morning. It's a powerful way to begin and end your day by invoking Allah's blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, fulfilling a command from Allah Himself and acting upon the Prophet's ﷺ teachings. Imagine the sun setting, and as you prepare for rest, you send these blessings, connecting yourself to the Prophet ﷺ and seeking his intercession.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely, with conviction and presence of heart. Ensure you are in a state of purity if possible, though it is not strictly a condition for sending salawat. The key is the intention and the remembrance of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Many scholars suggest reciting it at least once in the morning and once in the evening.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting salawat upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is a direct act of worship, a means of drawing closer to Allah, and a way to attain His mercy. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself said: 'Whoever invokes a blessing on me once, Allah will invoke a blessing on him tenfold.' (Sahih Muslim 408). This specific supplication is a comprehensive one, asking for both 'salah' (prayers/mercy) and 'barakah' (blessings). By sending salawat, we are not only honoring the Prophet ﷺ but also seeking his companionship and intercession on the Day of Judgment. It is also a beautiful way to remind ourselves of the legacy and Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ as we transition into the night.
