Evening Invocation: La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah

Evening Adhkar
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is Able to do all things.

La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir.

When to Read

This powerful invocation is recommended to be recited in the evening. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to say it ten times after the Maghrib prayer. It's a beautiful way to conclude your day, grounding yourself in the oneness of Allah and His complete power, as the darkness of night descends.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and contemplation. Focus on the meaning of each phrase: acknowledging Allah's absolute sovereignty and praising Him for His blessings. The Prophet ﷺ advised reciting it after Maghrib prayer. Try to say it while facing the Qiblah if possible, with a calm and present heart.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua in the evening offers immense rewards. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever says it in the evening will be protected from Satan until morning, and whoever says it in the morning will be protected from Satan until evening.' (Sahih Muslim 2708). It also serves as a powerful affirmation of Tawhid (Oneness of Allah), earning you abundant good deeds. It's a shield against evil and a constant reminder of our reliance on the Almighty.

Source & Authentication

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'When evening comes, wait not for the morning, and when morning comes, wait not for the evening. Take from your health (while you are well) for your illness, and from your life for your death. For indeed, it (i.e., life) is: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.' (O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and acceptable deeds.) And when you go to bed, say: 'Allahumma khalaqta nafsi wa anta tawaffaha, laka mamatuha wa mahyaha, in ahya'taha fahfadha, wa in amattaha faghfir laha. Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afiya.' (O Allah, You created my soul and You shall take its life. To You belongs its life and its death. If You keep it alive, guard it, and if You cause it to die, forgive it. O Allah, I ask You for well-being.) And 'A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min ghadabihi wa 'iqabihi, wa min sharri 'ibadihi, wa min hamazatis-shayatin wa an yahdurun. (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, from the evil of His servants, and from the evil whispers of devils, and from their presence.) Then, if you die on that night, you will die upon the primordial nature (fitrah), and if you wake up in the morning, you will wake up having gained good.' Another narration states: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'The one who says: 'La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir' – ten times after Maghrib prayer, Allah will appoint for him a guard against Satan until morning comes, and Allah will write ten good deeds for him, and blot out ten evil deeds from him, and raise him ten degrees, and he will be granted protection against all evil, and none of his enemies will have any power over him, and Satan will not approach him until he goes to sleep.'
