Dua for Seeking the Best of This Night and What Follows

Evening Adhkar
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5074

O Allah, I ask You for the best of this night, its opening, its help, its light, its blessings, and its guidance. And I seek refuge in You from the evil of this night and the evil of what comes after it.

Allahumma inni as'aluka khayra hadhihil-laylah, fatwaha, wa nasraha, wa nuraha, wa barakataha, wa hudaha, wa a'udhu bika min sharri hadhihil-laylah, wa sharri ma ba'daha.

When to Read

This dua is recited in the evening, typically after the Maghrib prayer or before going to sleep. It's a beautiful way to seek Allah's protection and blessings for the night ahead, acknowledging that the night has its own challenges and opportunities, just as the day does. We ask Allah to grant us ease, success, and guidance throughout these hours.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, reflecting on the meaning of each part. Raise your hands in supplication as you would for other duas. It's recommended to say it before the night fully sets in, marking the transition from day to night with a request to your Creator.

Virtues & Benefits

By reciting this dua, you are actively seeking Allah's protection from any potential harm or difficulty that may arise during the night, whether it's physical discomfort, spiritual distractions, or unforeseen circumstances. You are also proactively asking for the 'best' of the night – its opportunities for worship, reflection, and rest. This shows a profound trust in Allah (SWT) and an understanding that He alone controls the unfolding of events, both good and bad.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): When night fell, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka khayra hadhihil-laylah, fatwaha, wa nasraha, wa nuraha, wa barakataha, wa hudaha, wa a'udhu bika min sharri hadhihil-laylah, wa sharri ma ba'daha' (O Allah, I ask You for the best of this night, its opening, its help, its light, its blessings, and its guidance. And I seek refuge in You from the evil of this night and the evil of what comes after it). (Sunan Abi Dawud, Book 39, Hadith 5074 - Hasan)
