أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ
I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.
A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq
When to Read
This powerful dua is recommended to be recited in the evening as part of our protection against all forms of evil, including the evil eye. It's one of the essential supplications to safeguard oneself and one's family as the night descends, a time when one might feel more vulnerable. Recite it after Maghrib prayer or before going to sleep.
How to Read
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us to recite this dua three times in the evening. He would also blow into his hands and wipe over his body with them, starting with his head and face, and then repeating this three times. This practice signifies a comprehensive seeking of Allah's protection over our entire being. Ensure you recite with sincerity and conviction.
Virtues & Benefits
This supplication is a shield granted by Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) mentioned that whoever recites this dua three times in the evening will be protected from all harmful things until the morning. It is a beautiful way to trust in Allah's power to protect us from the unseen harms, including the envy and ill-will that can manifest as the evil eye.
Source & Authentication
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Whoever says this dua three times in the evening: A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created), nothing will harm him until he wakes up in the morning.' Another narration states: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to seek refuge in Allah from the evil eye, until the Surah of Al-Falaq and An-Nas were revealed. When they were revealed, he started reciting them and abandoned everything else. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017) While the specific dua 'A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq' is for general protection from all evil, the revelation of Al-Falaq and An-Nas provides specific protection against envy and magic, which are often linked to the evil eye. Therefore, it is also highly recommended to recite these two surahs for protection, especially in the evening.
