Evening Adhkar
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5088

In the name of Allah, with Whose name nothing on earth or in heaven can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

Bismillahil-ladhi la yadurru ma'asmihi shay'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i wa huwas-Sami'ul-'Alim.

When to Read

This powerful dua is recommended to be recited in the morning and evening. If your work duties extend into or begin at night, reciting this at the start of your shift, or even before leaving home for it, offers comprehensive protection and seeks Allah's blessing for the hours ahead. It's a shield against any potential harm, seen or unseen, and an affirmation of reliance on the Almighty as you undertake your responsibilities.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and conviction. Ensure you pronounce the Arabic words clearly and understand the meaning. It is ideally recited three times in the morning and three times in the evening, but even a single recitation with full presence of heart can bring immense benefit. Take a moment to reflect on the vastness of Allah's power and His knowledge as you utter these words.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ informed us of the immense virtue of this dua. He said: 'Whoever says this three times in the morning, will not be afflicted by any calamity until the evening; and whoever says it three times in the evening, will not be afflicted by any calamity until the morning.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 5088). This means reciting it before starting your night duties can safeguard you from unforeseen difficulties, accidents, or any form of harm throughout your work period, by the grace of Allah.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I was stung by a scorpion last night.' He said: 'If you had said, when evening came: 'A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq' (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created), it would not have harmed you.' So when the Prophet ﷺ was asked about that day, he said: 'As for the one who said it, he was protected from it.' Later, a man came to the Prophet ﷺ and complained of what had happened to him. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'As for the one who said, when evening came: 'Bismillahil-ladhi la yadurru ma'asmihi shay'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i wa huwas-Sami'ul-'Alim' (In the name of Allah, with Whose name nothing on earth or in the heaven can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing) – three times – he was not harmed.' (Note: The hadith text provided above incorporates both related narrations from Sunan Abi Dawud 5087 and 5088 for comprehensive understanding of the protection sought, with 5088 being the specific wording for 'evening').
