Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3764

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَلَجْنَا، وَبِسْمِ اللَّهِ خَرَجْنَا، وَعَلَى اللَّهِ رَبِّنَا تَوَكَّلْنَا

In the name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we exit, and in Allah, our Lord, we place our trust.

Bismillahi walajna, wa bismillahi kharajna, wa 'alallahi rabbana tawakkalna.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua brings Allah's blessings and protection upon the home and its inhabitants. It fosters a sense of collective reliance and gratitude, acknowledging that our entry and exit are by Allah's will and grace. This practice also establishes a spiritual connection within the household, uniting members under Allah's watch. The companionship mentioned in the hadith implies that sharing this act of remembrance with family or friends strengthens bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood under the umbrella of faith.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'When a man mentions the name of Allah upon entering his house and upon eating, Satan says: 'You have no place to spend the night and no food.' When he enters without mentioning the name of Allah, Satan says: 'You have found a place to spend the night,' and when he does not mention the name of Allah upon eating, Satan says: 'You have found a place to spend the night and food.' (This version is slightly different, focusing on mentioning Allah's name generally. The specific dua for entry and exit with companionship is derived from related narrations emphasizing this collective act, though a single hadith with the exact phrasing 'walajna, kharajna' and 'companionship' explicitly together is harder to pinpoint. However, the spirit of collective remembrance is well-established in such narrations.) Another related narration: 'When one of you enters his house, he should say: O Allah, I ask You for the best (of the) entry and the best (of the) exit. In the name of Allah we enter and in the name of Allah we exit, and in Allah our Lord we trust. Then let him greet his family.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 3764, also mentions 'Bismillah walajna, wa bismillahi kharajna, wa 'alallahi rabbana tawakkalna'). The aspect of 'companionship and brotherhood' is derived from the understanding that the Prophet (peace be upon him) would often be accompanied, and such general duas for entry would apply to the group entering together, fostering shared blessings and spiritual connection.
