Entering Home
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3764

بِسْمِ اللهِ وَلَجْنَا، وَبِسْمِ اللهِ خَرَجْنَا، وَعَلَى رَبِّنَا تَوَكَّلْنَا

In the name of Allah we enter, and in the name of Allah we leave, and in Allah our Lord we put our trust.

Bismillahi walajna, wa bismillahi kharajna, wa 'ala Rabbina tawakkalna.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited when entering your home. It's a way to begin your time inside with remembrance of Allah, seeking His blessings and guidance for everything that happens within its walls.

How to Read

Recite this clearly and with intention as you cross the threshold of your home. It’s a simple yet profound act of invoking Allah’s name and acknowledging our dependence on Him for entering, leaving, and for all aspects of our lives. When you enter your home, remember to also greet your family with a greeting of peace (Assalamu Alaikum). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us the importance of spreading peace amongst ourselves.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua imbues your home with barakah (blessings). By starting with Bismillah (In the name of Allah), you remind yourself and your household that Allah's name is present in all your actions. It fosters a sense of reliance on Allah (tawakkul) and invites His protection. When you say 'Bismillah' upon entering, Satan (Shaytan) is kept away from your home, as reported in another narration: 'When a man says Bismillah when entering his house and when eating, Satan says: ‘You have no place to spend the night and no food.’' (Sahih Muslim 2017). This dua sets a tone of remembrance and protection for your dwelling.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Jabir bin 'Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ instructed us, saying: 'When a man enters his house, he should say: Bismillah; and when he eats, he should say: Bismillah; for Satan says: 'You have your place to spend the night, and you have food.'' (When the man says Bismillah when entering his house, Satan says: 'You have no place to spend the night.') And when he eats, and he does not say Bismillah, Satan says: 'You have your place to spend the night and your food.' (Note: The specific wording 'Bismillahi walajna, wa bismillahi kharajna, wa 'ala Rabbina tawakkalna' is a supported supplication for entering the home, though the hadith above primarily focuses on saying 'Bismillah'. Both are excellent practices for remembrance and protection.)
