Dua for Entering Home: Seeking Allah's Protection from the Ill Effects of Gossip and Backbiting within the Household

Entering Home
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5094

O Allah, I ask of You the best of entry and the best of exit. In Allah's name we enter, in Allah's name we leave, and in Allah, our Lord, we put our trust. O Allah, open for us the doors of Your bounty.

Allahumma inni as'aluka khayr al-mawlij wa khayr al-makhraj, bismillahi walajna, wa bismillahi kharajna, wa 'ala Allahi Rabbina tawakkalna. Allahumma-ftah lana abwaba fadlik.

When to Read

This dua is recited when entering one's home. It's a beautiful way to sanctify our entry and seek Allah's blessings for our dwelling, which includes seeking protection from any negative influences, such as gossip and backbiting, that might creep in.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity as you or your family members enter your home. It's recommended to say 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) before even reciting the full dua, as a general practice for all actions. The emphasis should be on the intention of seeking Allah's protection and blessings for the home.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua covers seeking the best of both entering and leaving, invoking Allah's name for protection, acknowledging our reliance on Him, and asking for His favors. By extension, this seeking of Allah's bounty and blessings is a shield against negative elements like gossip and backbiting, which are detrimental to the peace and harmony of a household.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us the supplication for entering and exiting the house. When entering, one should say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka khayr al-mawlij wa khayr al-makhraj, bismillahi walajna, wa bismillahi kharajna, wa 'ala Allahi Rabbina tawakkalna. Allahumma-ftah lana abwaba fadlik.' (O Allah, I ask of You the best of entry and the best of exit. In Allah's name we enter, in Allah's name we leave, and in Allah, our Lord, we put our trust. O Allah, open for us the doors of Your bounty.) While this specific hadith doesn't directly mention protection from gossip, the act of seeking Allah's 'bounty' and protection upon entering the home is an encompassing request. A harmonious home, free from ill speech, is a great bounty. We can complement this dua with others specifically for guarding the tongue, especially when family members are present.
