Entering Home
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3764

بِسْمِ اللهِ وَلَجْنَا، وَبِسْمِ اللهِ خَرَجْنَا، وَعَلَى رَبِّنَا تَوَكَّلْنَا

In the name of Allah we enter, and in the name of Allah we exit, and in Allah, our Lord, we place our trust.

Bismillahi walajna, wa bismillahi kharajna, wa 'ala Rabbina tawakkalna.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited when entering your home. It's a powerful way to imbue your living space with blessings and protection from the outset. Think of it as setting the spiritual atmosphere the moment you cross the threshold, inviting peace and warding off any negativity that might linger or try to enter.

How to Read

Recite this with sincerity and mindfulness as you are about to enter your home. It's simple, yet profound. Uttering 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) before any action is a Sunnah that brings blessings. This specific dua acknowledges Allah's name upon entering and exiting, and importantly, reaffirms your reliance ('tawakkul') on Him for your safety and well-being within your home.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua upon entering your home, as taught by our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, invokes Allah's protection. It serves as a spiritual shield, safeguarding you and your family from any harm, negativity, or ill-will that might be present or attempt to enter your dwelling. It also reminds us that our home, like all aspects of our lives, is under Allah's dominion and care, fostering a sense of peace and security.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him): I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'When a man mentions the name of Allah upon entering his house and upon eating, Satan says: "You have no place to spend the night and no food." When he enters without mentioning the name of Allah, Satan says: "You have found a place to spend the night." And when he does not mention the name of Allah upon eating, Satan says: "You have found a place to spend the night and food."' (Sunan Abi Dawud, Vol. 3, Book 23, Hadith 3764 - Hasan). While the specific phrasing in the translation above is a common and widely accepted elaboration, the core Sunnah is mentioning Allah's name. Another narration (Sahih Muslim 2017) mentions mentioning Allah's name upon entering and exiting the house.
