Entering Home
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3764

بِسْمِ اللهِ، وَلَجْنَا، وَبِسْمِ اللهِ خَرَجْنَا، وَعَلَى رَبِّنَا تَوَكَّلْنَا

In the name of Allah we enter, and in the name of Allah we exit, and upon our Lord we rely.

Bismillahi walajna, wa bismillahi kharajna, wa 'ala Rabbina tawakkalna.

When to Read

This dua is recited when entering one's home, whether it is a permanent residence, a temporary dwelling, or even a place of work. It serves as a beautiful reminder to begin all our comings and goings with the name of Allah, acknowledging His protection and guidance.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely with the intention of seeking Allah's blessings and protection for your home and its inhabitants. It is recommended to say it aloud or softly as you cross the threshold of your home. It is also a Sunnah to say 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) when entering the home, even if no one else is there, and to greet the family with 'Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh' if they are present. This dua beautifully combines these actions.

Virtues & Benefits

By reciting this dua, we invite Allah's blessings ('barakah') into our homes. It acts as a shield against Shaytan and harmful influences, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When a man enters his house and mentions Allah Most High at the time of entering and at the time of eating, Shaytan says: 'You have no place to spend the night and no food.' When he enters without mentioning Allah Most High, Shaytan says: 'You have found a place to spend the night,' and when he does not mention Allah's name at the time of eating, Shaytan says: 'You have found a place to spend the night and food.' (Sahih Muslim 2018). This remembrance fosters a sense of peace and security within the home, strengthening the bonds between family members as they share in this beautiful Sunnah.

Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'When a man enters his house and mentions Allah Most High at the time of entering and at the time of eating, Shaytan says: 'You have no place to spend the night and no food.' When he enters without mentioning Allah Most High, Shaytan says: 'You have found a place to spend the night,' and when he does not mention Allah's name at the time of eating, Shaytan says: 'You have found a place to spend the night and food.'
